Why bookstores can't keep up with Landmark

Over the years, Landmark became a safe haven for booknerds who wanted books and stationary under one roof. Alongside Higginbothams, Landmark flourished into what seemed to be a bibliophile's paradise. But all of this came to an abrupt stop in 2014 because that year saw the end of the Landmark chain in Chennai. The store gave away its stock at a whopping discount and that was the end of Landmark's life in Chennai. Then other stores like Crossword and Star Mark came into the picture but they did not emit the same happy vibe that Landmark oozed. These stores provide very less to no discount and are not aesthetically pleasing. And to a bookworm who lives on Bronte and Tolkien, aesthetics is everything.
We live in the Utopian hope that the other bookstores will finally catch up with Landmark or that some new chain of stores will finally come into being. All we can do is hope and wait because hope is all we have left.

  1. I totally agree. Landmark and Oxford book stores were my favorite bookstores in Chennai and the end of both was really saddening and left a hole in my heart. :/
